Boston College Law School

BC has a very strong reputation and wide reach in Boston, but finding employment outside Boston (and New York, if you’ve got the grades for Biglaw) is a much larger challenge.

BC is a great place to go to law school. The students are collegial, and the workload is manageable. In terms of professors, it’s a mixed bag. There are a bunch of outstanding professors, but there are also several that should never have been offered tenure. In my experience, the administration has been reluctant to provide students with the type of services that an expensive, top-tier law school should provide. That being said, we got a new dean this year, so perhaps things will change.

The rumors are true, BC is a friendly environment with professors who are genuinely willing to help and peers who aren’t waiting to stab you in the back. The facilities are decent. You share a dining hall with some BC freshmen, the classrooms do their job and the library is nice (if not generaly on the colder side). From my experience the career services office was proportionally helpful to the amount of work you were also willing to put in.

I really love BC Law because the majority of students are down to earth and like to have fun. We go out a lot and keep everything pretty balanced.

The professors and alumni are incredibly open to meeting with students and sharing advice. Though my experience has been that the majority of the students at the school are very friendly, it’s still law school – people are competitive and want to do well. Having nothing to compare it to, it’s hard to determine whether the environment is more collegial than other law schools but be aware that wherever you choose to go, your fellow students will likely work incredibly hard. I am not sure where the “Disneyland of Law Schools” reputation comes from. It is certainly a pleasant place to attend law school, and I personally am enjoying the experience and have been quite satisfied thus far. Yet, the workload is still very heavy, especially in the second semester of the first year.

It is true what they say about BC Law, the student body is one of the most friendly anywhere. Make no mistake, the academics are rigorous and challenging, but being surrounded by people who genuinely care about one another makes all of the difference.

BC is a fun and laid back place, but it also rewards the people who work the hardest. If one wants to be in the upper half of a class, one can’t be lulled into a false sense of security by the people who go out frequently and have a lot of fun. There are quite a few people at the school who should be at tougher law schools and get great grades without working that hard, and there are also the people who work their hardest (usually those who haven’t gone straight through) and that is reflected in their grades. The faculty is hit or miss, but the professors who are good are awesome and very willing to sit down and help you out.
