What do these ratings mean?

The ATL School and Firm Insiders Survey asks self-identified current students, alumni, and practicing lawyers to rate major aspects of life at their law school (academics, social life, clinical training, career services, financial aid advising) and/or law firm (compensation, hours, morale, culture, training). We then translate these ratings into letter grades, where the mean score for each particular ratings category is the equivalent of a “B.”

We require a minimum threshold of responses for each institution before we publish any survey-based ratings content. Using a standard formula for statistical validity, we adhere to a threshold that gives us an 85% confidence level and a 10% margin of error. The precise threshold number will of course vary depending on the size of the individual institution. For example, for a law firm of 1,000 attorneys, we would require 50 responses in order to publish ratings for the firm.

No matter how great UT ranks, the east coast establishment will not take it seriously. Go here if you’re going to practice in “flyover country”–it is the BEST school for the price.

The CSO is only competent at assisting students in obtaining biglaw jobs. They don’t even seem to be able to compute the fact that someone might not want to go to a big law firm; that is beyond their comprehension. Their answer for non-biglaw aspirants? Government jobs. Interested in small firms, midsize firms, or corporations? Be prepared to go it alone.

The University of Texas has a virtual monopoly on the (biglaw) Texas legal market and does a much better job of getting you prepared to “think like a lawyer” than I could appreciate beforehand. There really is a big difference between a school that teaches the law and a school that teaches you how to think about the law. And Austin speaks for itself.

Collegial atmosphere despite there still being competition. For the most part there aren’t really very many douchebags.

For the price, you can’t do better. Just look at the employment break down on Tax Prof Blog. UT blows Georgetown, UCLA, USC out of the water.

How many students try to get into each region of the country and how many are successful. At first I was scared that UT was solely a regional powerhouse and couldn’t get me to the coasts. Then I became overly optimistic. Now based on what upper classmen have told me, I feel like as long as I keep my grades from slipping below median, I can pick something up if I put in some extra leg work with applications.

In my job search, people have had nothing but good things to say about UT. And I’m at median.

It’s way more fun than most law schools because Austin is an awesome city

UT is a large school with a lot of good options. It’s important to think big picture – what do you want to do after graduation? What kind of practice do you want [litigation, clerkship, trial law – yes, that’s still a thing, at least in criminal law, big firm, small firm]? There are enough course options that you can tailor your experiences to your career goals and still come out a well-rounded attorney with a good amount of practical experience and knowledge. It’s really one of the school’s virtues.

People are generally nice and laid-back. The society program is a great social institution. There’s a lot of partying but there are many students who choose not to as well. It’s a very diverse and large student body.
